I was in my late 40s when I realized the direct impact the food I ate had on the planet. Since I was a climate activist, I realized my vegetarian diet wasn’t going to cut it, so I went vegan to align my diet with my values. Soon after, I learned that my new diet might prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis that are knocking at my family history door. And amazingly, the arthritis in my shoulder and knees disappeared. Just like that. I then gained a more clear understanding of animal agriculture and how animals are treated. To say it was terribly upsetting would be a gross understatement.
